The wife of former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been arrested by Brazilian police after the Canadian was found dead in a hotel in north eastern Brazil.
The boxers body was found in the room on Saturday, it has transpired that Gatti was strangled with a handbag strap. Gatti’s wife Amanda Rodrigues was subsequently arrested, but has so far not been charged. She denies any wrong doing, but police are apparently curious as to why the woman stayed in the room for ten hours after the boxer had died.
Gatti and Rodrigues had allegedly booked the hotel room for a month in order to have a ’second honeymoon’, they had only arrived at the hotel on Friday night. Police are investigating reports of the couple arguingĀ the same night and that Gatti had been drunk.
Gatti was IBF super featherweight champion in 1995 and WBC light welterweight champion in 2004. He will be best remembered by fight fans for his three brutal encounters with championship rival Micky Ward between 2002 and 2003. All three fights went the full distance, with Ward winning the first of the three and the second and third going to Gatti, despite breaking his right hand in both fights. Gatti retired in 2007.
