Wasps to lose trio to France

John Williams - Tuesday 17.02.09, 13:42pm

Wasps are set to lose three key players from their squad at the end of this season, James Haskell, Riki Flutey and Tom Palmer will be leaving the club to play Rugby in France.

Flanker Haskell and lock Palmer will join Stade Francais in Paris while centre Flutey will join Brive. Wasps have hit out at the French league over the financial clout of it’s clubs, complaining that there is no longer a level playing field in terms of finance between the two countries, where France have no salary cap restrictions.

It is believed that the trio of players will enjoy a salary of up to three times more than they are able to earn in England, but Wasps executive chairman Mike Rigby is also concerned at the damage being done to the Premier league and development of English rugby players when French teams are able to take it’s prize assets.

“It does raise great concern that French clubs can now blow the English clubs away when it comes to salaries. There is a wider concern that the development of English rugby players will only be hampered as they move away from the Premiership, which stands as the best domestic league in the northern hemisphere, and regular head-to-head competition.” said Rigby.
