Roger Federer became the first tennis player to ever achieve 15 grand slam titles, when he defeated the in form American Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in the Mens Singles final on Sunday.
Federer surpassed the record set by Pete Sampras, following an epic four hour battle on the centre court in a marathon match stretched over five sets including an almost endless 30 game final set. It is Federer’s sixth Wimbledon title, a win that takes him back past his conqueror in last years final, Rafa Nadal and back to the number one player in the world.
Yet another classic Wimbledon final involving arguably the most complete player ever, but credit should also be given to Andy Roddick who in this last week has played the best tennis of his life, beating Andy Murray against the odds in the semi’s and producing some breathtaking tennis in the final against Federer.
Federer won the final 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14.
