RBS Six Nations Rugby

Terry Lane - Tuesday 03.02.09, 15:03pm

The RBS Six Nations Rugby competition starts on Saturday 7th February. Wales beat off the challenge of the best of the northern hemisphere rugby nations to win a Grand Slam victory in the 2008 Six Nations Competition.

Wales will join England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy in a series of games in February.

Former Rugby England World Cup captain turned manager, Martin Johnson will be attempting to reclaim the Six Nations crown when he leads England into battle.

The opening matches start this weekend, Saturday 7th February with England v Italy at Twickenham, and Ireland v France and the BBC will have live exclusive coverage of every 2009 Six Nations match.

BBC One live coverage
of the England v Italy match starts at 2pm (kick off 3pm) and Ireland v France at 4.50pm (kick off 5pm).

England manager Martin Johnson announced the England team to face Italy today. The most noticeable exclusion was Danny Cipriani.  The 21-year-old Wasps fly-half will instead play for the England Saxons squad to face Ireland A in Dublin this Friday.

Martin Johnson has surprised many rugby critics by recalling Andy Goode to the team. Goode hasn’t played for England for two years but has been picked on merit after a good season with Brive.

The England Rugby team to face Italy:

D Armitage (London Irish); P Sackey (Wasps), M Tindall (Gloucester), R Flutey (Wasps), M Cueto (Sale Sharks); A Goode (Brive), D Care (Harlequins); A Sheridan (Sale Sharks), L Mears (Bath), P Vickery (Wasps), S Borthwick (Saracens, Captain), N Kennedy (London Irish), J Haskell (Wasps), S Armitage (London Irish), N Easter (Harlequins).

On Sunday Scotland play Wales.
