World number two Rafael Nadal spent just 36 minutes on court in his comeback match at Montreal following a ten week lay off with a knee injury. However it was his opponent, fellow Spaniard David Ferrer who ended the game, forced to retire with an injury of his own.
Ferrer had started the match with one knee heavily strapped and in his short time on court required two visits from his trainer before being forced to withdraw, with the score at 4-3 to Nadal in the first set.
Nadal had some concerns that the short game had not given him the workout that he needed to test his knee, but none the less was happy to go through to the third round where he will meet German Phillip Petzchner.
Meanwhile Andy Murray will face another Spaniard in the third round when heĀ faces Juan Carlos Ferrero who he beat in the Wimbledon quarter finals in June.
