Andy Murray was easily beaten by the World number one Rafa Nadal in the final of the India Wells Masters 1000 yesterday. The strong gusting winds that have prevailed throughout much of the tournament, continued through the final and spoilt what might have been another Nadal-Murray classic encounter.
The 6-1, 6-2 scoreline may refelect Nadal’s overall dominance of the game, but it was not quite so one sided on the court where both players tried their bests to overcome the extreme weather conditions and play some wonderful tennis.
The game was played at quite a pace with some excellent long rallies throughout, but it was Nadal who coped with the conditions better, romping through the first set in just 41 minutes. A jaded and frustrated Murray gathered himself together for the start of the second set and the first four games went with service. Once Nadal had broken the Brits serve a second time the title was in the bag.
“He definitely deserved the win, he played great in difficult conditions and dealt with it incredibly well,” said British number one Murray.
