Great Britain gained two silver and two bronze medals but could not secure a win on day one at track cycling’s World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland.
Wendy Houvenaghel was beaten by New Zealander Alison Shanks in the individual pursuit final and GB’s Olympic champion team sprint trio were pipped to the finishing line by 0.3 seconds by France.
There were also bronze medals for Chris Newton in the points race and Victoria Pendleton in the 500m time trial.
For a GB team without stars Chris Hoy and Rebecca Romero this isn’t a bad haul at all for the GB cycling team. With three days of racing left to go, we could well see bigger and better performances in the main events today.
Perhaps Britain’s best hopes lie with Mark Cavendish, the only member of the cycling squad to miss out on a medal at the Beijing Olympics. He will be striving for a medal amongst the long-distance races today.
