Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton is the surprise choice to take over as manager at League Two club Lincoln City, the team have been looking for a new boss since Peter Jackson was sacked at the start of September.
Lincoln say that Sutton impressed the board with his “enthusiasm, ambition and preparation” and the club are willing to take a ‘calculated gamble’ in giving the player his first break into football management.
Sutton will be joined by former Blackburn team mate Ian Pearce at Sincil Bank as his assistant, the pair will take control of the team on Wednesday, while Simon Clark remains in charge for the Tuesday night game against Notts County.
Lincoln are currently 19th in League Two following a dreadful start to the campaign that has continued since the sacking of Jackson.
A club statement read: “We received over 70 applications for the vacant manager’s post and although this double appointment could be seen as a calculated gamble, the board have every confidence in Chris and Ian and are looking forward to working with them.
Both Chris and Ian impressed every member of the board with their enthusiasm, ambition and preparation and the decision to appoint them was a unanimous one.”
Sutton enjoyed the best football of his life at Blackburn where he formed a deadly partnership with Alan Shearer, he was formerly with Norwich where he started out as a defender. He moved from Blackburn to a dismal time at Chelsea before a move to Celtic saw him back to his goal scoring best.

He doesn’t seem to me to be the manager type but time will tell. If he can do a job there it will be proof enough
