Kim Clijsters claimed the scalp of Venus Williams in the US Open fourth round tie, her biggest win since announcing her comeback from retirement.
The former number one stunned Williams with a flurry of powerful winning shots to win the first game 6-0. But Williams bounced back with some blazing tennis to return the compliment and equal the match with her own 0-6 second game.
The third set was predictably a tighter game with Clijsters hanging on to a solitary break to win the match 6-0, 0-6, 6-4. Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters last met in the quarter finals of this event in 2005, when Clijsters advanced in a three set match.
A jubilant Clijsters said after the game;
“It was unbelievable, I don’t know what to say. It was such a weird match, especially those first two sets. But after I lost the second at 6-0, I said, let’s start over and start a new match. I’ve been working really hard the last seven, eight months and I’m enjoying it. It’s something that’s really important for myself, as long as I can focus on tennis and have fun on the outside as well.”
The Belgian will face China’s Li Na in the next round of the US Open.
