Floyd Mayweather to consider moving up a weight for next contest

John Williams - Wednesday 05.05.10, 17:35pm

Following his win over Shane Mosley last weekend, Floyd Mayweather is considering stepping up a weight to take on Sergio Martinez in his next fight, although he has yet to make any decision.

Mayweather should fight Manny Pacquiao, a bout that was originally scheduled for March 13th, but the boxers could not agree on either the financial split or drug testing schedule.

Following Mayweather’s win over Mosley in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning (BST), the World champion stated that the fight against Pacquiao could still be on if an agreement could be made over drug testing. He said “If Manny takes the [blood] test, we can make the fight happen.”

Mayweather v Pacquiao is the match that the fans have been clamouring for and if it ever happened, could also be the most lucrative in boxing history, with each boxer standing to take a $25 million purse.

Pacquiao is currently involved in a very different fight as he is campaigning to be elected to the senate in his home country, the Philippines and is unlikely to be thinking about boxing until the elections are over on May 10th.

In typical bullish manner, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum brushed off suggestions of his fighter meeting Mayweather, saying; “I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. What I’m concerned about right now is Manny winning the election. If the fight doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. We’re not going to be dictated to.”
