David Haye vs John Ruiz @ MEN Arena, Manchester

Edwin Huxley - Tuesday 30.03.10, 13:35pm

David Haye was born in October 1980 and before he turned his attention to becoming a heavyweight champion of the world he was a cruiserweight champion, holding the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring magazine cruiserweight titles.

In 2002 he won 8 fights, all by knockouts.  David Haye turned professional in December 2002 and knocked out veteran Tony Booth in two rounds.

With a commitment to become the best in the world, Haye signed a three year contract with former Lennox Lewis promoter Frank Maloney in January 2006.

In 2009 David Haye had the chance to become the heavyweight champion of the world when he was offered to fight first Vitali Klitschko in London and then his younger brother Wladimir Klitschko in Germany.  The fight with Wladimir Klitschko was due to take place on 2oth June but on 3rd June Haye pulled out of the fight with a back problem.

The next opportunity David Haye would have to show the world what a great heavyweight boxer he was would be on 7th November against Nikolai Valuev.  Sky TV billed the fight as David & Goliath.

David Haye will be defending his WBA world heavyweight title for the first time this weekend against John Ruiz at The MEN Arena, Manchester on Saturday, 3rd April 2010.

Haye has shown his opponent the utmost respect in the lead up to this weekend’s big fight by suggesting he is going to have to take some punishment from the American brawler and that it will possibly be the toughest fight of his life.

But that’s not to say David Haye will not be confident of retaining his WBA title after a fantastic fighting display against Nikolai Valuev, the 22st 7ft giant last November in Nuremberg, where he proved he is the best heavyweight boxer that Britain has produced for many years.
