Former World number one Kim Clijsters, who returned to tennis last year after a two year break, was welcomed back to Wimbledon today for her first match here since 2006.
The Belgian made short work of first round opponent Maria Elena Camerin from Italy. Dropping just three games throughout, Clijsters demolished her opponent 6-0, 6-3.
The popular Clijsters strolled through the first set, but faced some resistance from Camerin for the second, a single break of serve being enough to ensure the win in just over one hour.
Having competed in an exhibition match alongside Tim Henman, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, to celebrate the installation of the sliding roof at Wimbledon in May last year, Clijsters was given a wild card entry to the US Open to evaluate her ‘comeback’.
She went on to become the first ‘wild card’ to win at the US Open, beating Caroline Wozniacki in the final and seeing off both Venus and Serena Williams along the way.
