Floyd Mayweather who claimed earlier in the week that he was better than Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali, continued to big himself up ahead of this weekend’s big fight against Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.
“There are some athletes that are just different, like Kobe, Lebron, Kevin Garnett and then there are athletes who are just talented. I just happen to be an athlete that’s God gifted” said Mayweather at Wednesday’s final pre fight press conference.
And he does have a good point. Unbeaten in 40 contests including 25 knock outs and six world championships in five different weight classes does take something more than just special.
Two years ago he was rated as the best pound for pound boxer in the world, by the well respected boxing publication The Ring.
Mosley is no slouch having won world titles in three weight divisions, but he does come with a somewhat tarnished reputation having been caught up in the steroids scandal in 2003, admitting that he injected himself prior to his win over Oscar De la Hoya.
Most recently at 37 years old and underdog in his WBA Welterweight contest with Antonio Margarito in January 2009, against the odds Mosley destroyed the ‘younger stronger’ boxer with a brutal display to regain the title.
With both Mayweather and Mosley finally coming together at the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday May 1st, boxing fans will have the opportunity to witness one of the most anticipated contests of recent times. Mayweather has to be favourite but that takes the pressure off Mosley, as in January 2009.
Lets hope the fight lives up to the hype.
