Harry Carpenter,’the voice of boxing’ has died in his sleep aged 84 years old.
Carpenter was most recently known for the double act partnership that grew through his friendship with the British boxing hero Frank Bruno, but by that he time he was already famous in his own right as BBC’s boxing commentator, a position he held for almost fifty years.
Carpenter eventually retired from broadcasting in 1994, having commentated on all the crucial fights during his career and striking up friendships with many of the best known boxers throughout that time.
Carpenter was passionate about his sport but showed amazing impartiality while doing his job, dropping his guard just once on air when Frank Bruno was fighting Mike Tyson in 1989, when he let slip ‘Get in there Frank’ during the commentary.
He recalled the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in which Muhammad Ali reclaimed the World heavyweight crown from George Foreman in the eighth round as ‘the most extraordinary few seconds that I have ever seen in a boxing ring.’
Harry Carpenter suffered a minor heart attack last summer and has been unwell since. He died in his sleep at Kings College Hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
