Britain’s Andy Murray enters new territory today when he will be confirmed as the World’s number two ranked tennis player following his progress in the Montreal Roger Cup Championship.
Murray’s opponent in Sunday’s final in Montreal, Juan Martin Del Potro had beaten Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals and then eliminated the rejuvenated Andy Roddick in the semi’s and was always going to be tough opponent for the Scot.
Murray had to use all of his resolve to fightback against Del Potro after the big hitting Argentinian threatened to spoil the party by taking the first set on a tie break, after neither player dropped serve.
A tight second set ensued in which both players showed confidence and played some fantastic tennis, the set eventually going to tie break again, this time in Murray’s favour. The third set became a formality for Murray as Del Potro struggled physically with a shoulder injury and called on his trainer a couple of times for relief.
Murray ran out the deserved winner of the tournament with a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory, his fourth Masters title and 13th career title. The win is Murray’s fifth of 2009, matching Nadal for most tournament victories.
